Title: “ECTOPIC MAXILLARY CANINE WITH GREATLY REDUCED OR CLOSED SPACE – IS NONEXTRACTIONAL THERAPY POSSIBLE?

Abstract:

The ectopic maxillary canines with greatly reduced or even closed space is a dento-maxillary anomaly frequently encountered in our daily practice. This is because the upper canines are the last replacement teeth to erupt in the usual eruption order.

Creating space through extraction methods (especially of the upper first premolars) is the therapeutic option that is most frequently opted for in these situations. But not always, in the context of other associated anomalies, the extraction methods of creating space help us in the correct management of the orthodontic treatment and in its optimal completion.

Thus, the presentation aims to highlight a series of clinical cases diagnosed with upper ectopic canines associated with severe crowding, in which, in order to create space for the canines, other methods were used besides the extraction ones.

The choice of these treatment options represents an advantage both for the patients (who will keep all his masticatory units) and for the orthodontist, given that the extraction of some teeth would call into question the final result of the treatment, as a result of the associated anomalies and conditions in the patient’s oral cavity.
